Sundevil History 1973- 1983

The Sundevils First Team - 1973
1973-75
Rugby has been a fixture since the school first opened its doors. At that time, and for many years after, only
grades 10-12 were housed in the building and many of the grade tens were called upon to play at both junior and senior levels. Some of them still play the game, at the over-forty level.

These grade tens were competent players by the time they reached their senior year, and a tour to the United Kingdom was planned, becoming a reality in the spring of that year. It was an exciting and successful experience in many ways, improving the overall rugby skills and creating a team spirit of togetherness (that sometimes elusive quality, most difficult to create). After graduating that year many of the group decided to stick together, and so was founded The Tsawwassen Rugby Club

Tsawwasen's Founding Fathers - 1977
1977
We have had our share of hosting teams from outside our Province. The first, from England was
Hurstpierpoint College, followed later by Sponne School (England), Monmouth (Wales) and teams from California, Quebec and Ontario.

Sundevil Senior Team - 1977
1978
Our second tour to the U.K. proved as successful as the first and we were beginning to think in terms of regular two-year Excursions. However, the expense was becoming a problem And fund-raising was moredifficult and time consuming.
1979-80
In 1979 the team went through a re-building phase. Charlie MInns, teaching in North Delta put together a squad of Delta ruggers who played in the B.C. Summer Games in Richmond. This brought the North and South together and provided a surge in the idea of playing club rugby. In 1980, the Sundevilos hosted Kelston High School of New Zealand, then just missed out on the B.C. Championships, loosing narrowly to Centennial.
1981
Our final overseas trip, again to the U.K., was very successful, but we were beginning to think of less adventurous trips that might accomplish similar goals. So the annual pilgrimage to the Kamloops and Namaimo Tournaments became part of our schedule.
