Our philosophy:

The team philosophy is that everyone is welcome, and everyone plays according to their comfort level and their commitment to practices. For a lot of the younger girls, they're worried that they're too small for rugby. One of the great things about rugby is that there are positions for everyone.

This year we'll be focused on education and getting into the more technical aspects of the game. Mental preparation is just as important as physical fitness, both prepare you for a safe and competitive adventure. Rugby is a game of 15 players and everyone is critical to the success of the team.

Our History

The South Delta She Devils had their first practice on January 22, 2008. Working from a core of about 22 girls, a squad was formed around a physically strong scrum and a group of backs that actually enjoyed tackling practice. The team's knowledge progressed strongly and the coaches decided to skip the development league and go directly into competition enrolling in the AA Fraser Valley School League for 2008.

Our first game was at home against Heritage Park of Mission. It took place on the Oval and we narrowly lost 10-5 in a hard fought game against a more experienced side. Our first victory was against Haney in a close 15- 10 game at home, it was sweet. In 2009 the team expanded to 35 players. The competition was tought but we managed to score in most of our games, despite the fact we didn't record a victory.

This year we have high hopes for the team. A number of players have two years of rubgy behind them and a good core have one year. With the addition of some new athletes, we're confident the She Devils will be stronger than ever in 2010.

Joanne has been a coach with the She Devils since 2008, when girls rugby had it's re-birth at SDSS. in fact she coached the team in their first game, a close 15-10 loss to Heritage Park. Joanne is a Special Education Teacher at South Park and in 2009, she completed the Rugby Level 2 - National Coaching Certification Program.

Ray Higgs

Ray began his rugby career in 1968 with Magee High School and Kats RFC in the Vancouver Rugby Union. In his senior year at Magee, Ray was part of the New Zealand Shield Championship squad. Ray was on the first Kats junior team and in men's rugby played all the way up and down the ladder, from fourth to first division and back. Several championships were collected along the way and afterwards Ray joined the Vancouver Evergreen Rugby club over 40 team for two seasons. He retired from playing the game at 44 years young.

Sharon Sutherland

Sharon is looking forward to a great season with the She Devils. She remains a tad bitter about the lack of a girls’ rugby program during her own time at SDSS, but is thrilled to come back and join an increasingly vibrant program at her alma mater. Sharon has many years of coaching experience in field hockey, softball and soccer. She completed her Coaching Association of Canada Level 1 Rugby Referee Course, in March 2010 and when she’s not on the field, Sharon is an Assistant Professor at UBC Faculty of Law and a practicing mediator specializing in child protection and civil mediation.

Bill Connor

Bill is a veteran of the Gibson Rugby Club, playing in the Vancouver Rugby Union. He has been coaching the She Devils since 2009. Bill works with the forwards and has helped to improve our line-outs with some new plays and

Brad Campbell

Brad is a Vancouver Firefighter and has been the She Devils's First Aid 'Go-to-Guy' since our re-inception in 2008. Brad's calm demeanor and love for the game, help calm the nerves of the coaches on the sidelines. Safety is critical and we're so glad we have Brad.

Natasha Fung

Natasha played scrum half for the She Devils in 2008 and went on to UBC, where she is currently playing Break Forward. With a strong focus on athletics and sports as part of her core study, we're looking forward to having Natasha join our crew after she's finished her exams in late April.

Claude Paterson

Claude has worked with the She Devils since our re-inception in 2008. Our resident 'Kiwi', (in New Zealand rugby is more like a religion than a sport) Claude can often be heard saying: ' 10 press- ups now Triano '. Claude works to focus the forwards on getting low and driving in the loose, something we can always get better at. He also is also an internationally accredited referee and referees most of the She Devil home games.
